  • Hospice care is provided for a person who is suffering from a terminal illness whose doctor believes that he or she has six or less months to live if the illness runs its natural course.  Many people wait to receive this care towards the final weeks of life.  But it is important to discuss and talk with the patients doctor about the illness and how he or she is progressing.  Starting hospice care early may be able to give the patient months of quality care and quality time with their loved ones.

  • Hospice at home gives the patient a dignified life in the comfort of their home surrounded by their loved ones. Care is taken by an inter-disciplinary team to address the physical, medical, emotional, and spiritual needs of a patient and the family.  A plan of care is developed with other physician involved in the care to help achieve a quality and pain free life despite the illness.

  • Anyone who is suffering from a terminal illness whose doctor believes that he or she has six or less months to live if the illness runs its natural course usually qualifies for hospice care. It is for people who choose to focus on their comfort for their remaining days over the treatment of the illness.  Diagnoses that are commonly associated with hospice usually include heart disease, respiratory disease, AIDS/HIV, Dementia/Alzheimer’s, liver or Renal failure, Cancer, Stroke, and other terminal diseases.

  • Most admissions commence with a referral from the patient’s doctor, case manager or social worker after the patient receives a diagnosis of six months or less.

  • Most MedicaidMedicare, and private insurance providers cover the services provided by a hospice agency. Most plans cover hospice care along with the medications, medical supplies, and medical equipment related to the hospice prognosis. For Medicare to pay for hospice care, patients need to meet the below mentioned conditions:

    • Your doctor must certify that you are terminally ill with a life expectancy of 6 months or less

    • You accept comfort care instead of treatment to cure your illness

    • You sign a statement choosing hospice care instead of other Medicare-covered treatment for your illness
